Physical Activity & Active Communities and Nutrition

Strategic Priority - DIABETES

Priority Goal 1

Increasing participation in physical activity and access to nutritious foods - young people

Key Action Area 1 - Young People

Objectives:

The strategies employed for this priority area aim to build upon initiatives currently in place as part of the many health promotion projects currently underway across Campaspe.

The focus of this work will be to target young, under-privileged or 'at risk' members of our community and the settings they are involved with. This includes continuing to work with the secondary schools across the catchment, as well as identifying and engaging other settings where disengaged young people associate.

Capacity building will continue to be a focus with a number of workshops and forums planned to support the implementation of the plan.

Priority Goal 2

Increasing participation in physical activity and access to nutritious foods - workplaces

Key Action Area 2 - Workplaces

Objectives:

The focus of this area is to target at risk' /low SES workers and workplaces of poor health outcomes and implement healthy lifestyle changes in at risk workplaces.

Echuca Regional Health partnered with Greater Murray YMCA and delivered a workplace wellness program at YMCA, based on the findings of a staff and volunteers needs analysis. The program ran over 13 weeks and comprised health and wellbeing education and physical activity sessions and centred on the improvement of an individual's physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Echuca Regional Health and Kyabram and District Health Services have been working to implement health promotion into their core business. This has involved a range of interventions including the development of various committees and an analysis of organisational policies and procedures.

PACeN Partnership Group and Projects

The Physical Activity and Nutrition partnership group (PACeN) supports a collaborative approach to physical activity participation and access to nutritious food in Campaspe. The PACeN partnership group consists of representatives from Campaspe PCP's member agencies, including the Shire of Campaspe, YMCA Greater Murray, Sports Focus, local health services, Kyabram Sports Stadium and local community houses. The group has a commitment to share information and resources, influence decision makers and to increase awareness of the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating. The partnership group has successfully collaborated to secure over $1 million dollars in health promotion grants to enable the great health promotion work of its members to continue in the Campaspe Shire. For 2009 - 2012 the partnership are focusing their work on these key areas:
